5 Things About Me….

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:55 pm by PaperDesigns

captured-in-time

Here’s one of my favorite ones that I made for the “Use your Scraps Card Making Blog Challenge”.

The challenge question for the day was: name your 5 best attributes. Now, I would normally just list things like, trustworthy, honest, a good friend…. But I thought, I’ll ask my 10 year old daughter, and just write whatever she said. Luckily she’s in a good mood this morning…

Her list of my 5 best attributes:

Kind, Sweet, Fun, Lovable, and Helpful

The irony – those would be the 5 top things I’d pick if I were listing her best attributes!!

Here’s a fall or Thanksgiving card for the “Use Your Scraps Challenge” gallery.

But that which is driving my creative muse at the moment is the promise of Spring! It’s almost zero here, and the garden beds are sitting still, awaiting the thaw, and the beginning of planting season. I love this time (not the dead of winter – but the upcoming time) when I can begin my garden for the year, and anticipate all the wonderful offerings it will produce. This promise of Spring is playing out in my art – as so many of my projects of late seem to have flowers, and bright pastel colors running through them. It isn’t deliberate – just something I’ve noticed in myself.

Here’s to dreaming of Spring! May all the flowers bloom!

The Life Ahead Of Me

Here’s another card I’ve made from my paper scraps. I keep working through the pile, but there seems to be a lot of cards you can make from a handful of scraps!!

How would I like my life to be in 10 years? I pray I’ll still have what I have today. We are all well, happy, and together – I don’t know of anything more important. So whenever I think about these kinds of questions, I usually have to think of them in reference to me personally, and professionally. In 10 years, our youngest will probably be grown and gone, and I will have a hard time adjusting. I know this about myself – I will fight overwhelming sadness every day that those years of raising my children are gone. I know it is the way of things, and I wouldn’t want it to be any different – but I will have a hard time. So, in order to prepare myself for that day, I have started a small company. It’s something I pour “me” into. It’s something I hope will grow, and sustain me, and keep me busy enough so that I will have “something” to fill the hours when I’m no longer “mommy” to my little ones. In 10 years – I hope to be very, very busy!

The Psychic in All of Us

Diva-card

I’m finally getting around to posting the new cards. I made these with more of the scraps from my original handful. So my Challenge to use them up is paying off for me. How about you???

The blog challenge is: have you ever predicted an event, and it unfolded like that. Sure, I’m a mom – I’m constantly saying things like “tie your shoes or you’ll trip” – and sure enough, they trip!! OR “that glass is too full, you’re going to spill it” – and sure enough – we now need to get the mop! But my Psychic Predictions are pretty much limited to the obvious. I’m usually predicting things in the future that are likely to happen – and then I’m not surprised when they do!

Past, Present and Future

Still creating cards – I’ll have the new ones ready to upload today! I made quite a few yesterday, and I’m not sure I even made a dent in my “scrap pile” …

The blog challenge asked if I live in the past, present or future. I have to say that I think about the past – so as to not repeat any mistakes. I dream about the future, and I even try to plan for it, but it isn’t here yet, and anything can happen. I realized long ago that only place I could call “mine” was the present. If I take care of the present, and do everything right now that I know to be right and good, I find that the future takes care of itself, and the past isn’t something I fear!

Tatoos?

I’m still busy creating the cards for the challenge – it’s looking like my little handful of scraps is going to end up making a stack of all occasions cards! I’m so glad to be using up my scraps, though – it’s going to be great to have cards on hand when I need them, too! I hope you’ll join in the Challenge! (You can click on the card above to see the Gallery, too)

The Blog Challenge is what tatoo would I get. I’m not really a tatoo person, because I can’t imagine volunteering to put myself through pain! DH said he wanted to get one, and thought we should go together. I thought that was sweet, “oh Honey, are we going to get matching tatoos?” “Sure” he said, “If you want to get a skull and crossbones that reads ‘Death from Above’”!!! Needless to say, I didn’t go with him – but to date, he hasn’t gone to get one either!

Artist or Writer??

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:45 am by PaperDesigns

The blog challenge question is: Would I rather be a great musician, artist, scientist, politician, athlete, or writer?

I feel I wouldn’t want to give the time, energy and commitment to being a great musician, athlete, or scientist. But hmmmmmm artist or writer? That’s a hard one! It’s going to come down to which would I rather be remembered as…. hmmmm, nope still to close to call. I won’t be able to choose between them. I love to write articles. I have 2 heading for publication in a major magazine, and I’m continually writing articles for PaperDesignsByBarbara.com. But the part of me that spends 6-15 hours a day crafting – doesn’t want to be ignored! I’d love to be remembered for my art – even “Oh, Barb, yeah, she made some nice cards” would be nice. I get no love in my house…. Even DD, for her birthday party, asks me to BUY the invites! Oh well…

Here’s one… and it was made from scraps for the USE YOUR SCRAPS CARD MAKING CHALLENGE

Good Luck

My Favorite Store

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:05 am by PaperDesigns

Thank You

Is any store that sells paper!! I love paper! The embellishments are great, and I love all the cool new tools, but I am crazy about paper! And like everything with styles – they go in and out – my favorite paper obsession at the moment is two sided patterned paper. It looks and feels like patterned cardstock – but is designed on both sides. It is so great for card crafting – the inside is already done! Not just plain white! And of course, all of those elements matching together. I just love mixing and matching patterns and creating card and envelope coordintates. Way too much fun.

And for any of you with paper scraps, there’s a challenge on for making cards with them! There are RAKs to be awarded, and anyone can win! I hope you’ll enter – put your card in the GALLERY or email it me, BARBARA and I’ll get it posted.

There’s also a thread on Two Peas that is a running view of the cards from the challenge. It should be fun to use up those scraps and make some all occasion cards for the year! You know you’ll use them!

Use Your Scraps Card Making Challenge

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:14 am by PaperDesigns

I’m so excited, this is right up my alley! I love making cards, and I love the idea of using up some of my huge collection of scraps. This is what I’ve done… I’ve taken out a huge handful of scraps, and I’m going to see how many cards I can create from them!

 IMGP4750

So that’s my mess on the floor there. Now I’ve got to make some cards! I’ve got five done.

Here’s where you come in – The Green Sneaker’s Kreate-A-Lope.com Blog is sponsoring this challenge. It’s for everyone and I think it seems worthwhile. Firstly, you’ll be making a collection of all occasion cards for the year! I know I am always saying I’m going to do that…. Secondly, you’ll be using up those wonderful scraps – too nice to throw away, but not usually big enough to use on layouts! AND the blog will be giving away some RAKs on Valentine’s Day and those who post cards are eligible.

So how do you post cards? You can check out the Gallery and register and then upload your cards or you can email them to me from the Kreate-A-Lope Blog and I’ll get them posted. Either way, it sounds like fun. I’m really looking forward to this one!

A Little Effort Goes A Long Way – in Cardmaking!

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:52 pm by PaperDesigns

Thanksgiving-Card1

This is a card I made the other day, and as I was creating it, I kept thinking – this looks harder than it is! I stamped the image with brown dye ink onto glossy cardstock, let dry (seconds), and then colored in the image with watercolor, acid free markers. The markers on the glossy cardstock show up bright and, well, glossy!

Using a deckle edge, I cut out the image from the cardstock, and to create unity, I used the same deckle edge to cut out the vellum quote, and the paper for the card. I used the same deckle edge on the matching envelope as well.

Another reason I like the deckle edges – it is difficult to ascertain if the card has a hole cut in the front and the image is attached on the inside or is the cardstock cut with a deckle edge, and put on the front of the card. If I weren’t looking for this optical illusion, I would have inked the deckle edges (another nice look) – but then it is obvious that the image is attached to the front of the card.
